Q: Why do so many prayers go unanswered? There is a widespread explanation that God does answer every prayer, but every once in a while He has to say “no”, because some things we pray for are not in our best interest. Is this explanation correct?

A: I believe it is correct in some cases. In most cases, however, our prayers just do not reach the necessary level of depth, intensity, and devotion that can open our soul to receive the desired result. We fail to attune ourselves to the ever-present flow of Spirit. It can express itself through us only if we are properly aligned with it. Once you learn to align your spiritual heart, mind and soul with the flow of Spirit, you will not be able to pray for anything that is not in your best interest. This is a very important premise to understand. Let me elaborate. If you align your will with God’s Will in deep meditation, you will not be able to pray for anything that would harm your spiritual growth. In other words, you will be able to pray only for things that are good for you and others, in accordance with God’s Will. Which means that there will never be unanswered prayers again. Sooner or later, all your prayers will be answered!

When you pray occasionally in a conversational way typical of your wakeful conscious state, you waste your time and deepen your false sense of security that “you have prayed”. Although Spirit hears and records everything you are saying, there is little it can do to help you. It can only do for you that which it can do through you, that is through the multi-layered subconscious phase of your mind. When you superficially pray for a healing and your subconscious mind believes in a possibility of disease, you are praying in vain. Deep prayer and meditation temporarily suspend the conscious and even the subconscious mind and allow more light and creative energy of Spirit to flow toward the situation you pray for. If you persevere, that light and that energy will weaken and erase some of the layers of erroneous beliefs in your subconscious mind. Intense prayer and meditation practiced on a regular basis have a cumulative effect, and eventually you will reach a point where you will always be attuned to the presence of God within you. Then all your needs will be automatically satisfied even before you ask.

Q: Should I continue the type of treatment recommended by my physician while I am concentrating on a healing from a spiritual perspective?

A: Absolutely. Always ask God to guide you to do your part in your own healing: To make the necessary adjustments in your way of life or your diet, to see the right doctor. Affirm the presence of God before, during, and after a treatment, a procedure, a surgery. Thank God for using that particular person to be His instrument of healing, that particular piece of equipment, the type of treatment, the drug. Remain attuned to the only real Healer throughout your experience. You’ll be glad you did.

Q: How can a monastic like yourself possibly function in the world?

A: If your commitment to God is strong enough, it doesn’t matter where you live and work. If your commitment is weak, no monastery will protect you from the ever-present temptations of the ego. I have my own monastery around me. Its invisible walls are impervious to the false glitter of the material world. I no longer seek human love and have very few personal attachments. At some point in my earlier life my perception of the world shifted irrevocably. I was given permission from within to forgo a limited happiness of having my own family so that I could give more of my earthly time to a larger family and to the Parent we are all blessed to share.

In other words, to answer your question, wherever I go, the walls of my monastery follow me. So does the only temple that really matters, the one in my heart.
