| The Breathing Prayer In the sentences, “In my heart I worship you, Lord” and “Touch his/her heart…”, it is not the physical heart we are referring to, but a spiritual center in the middle of our chest that comes alive when we concentrate on it with devotion. It can be felt physically and emotionally as a current of warmth, love, and compassion, flowing from the center of our being. It is where the Presence dwells. When we deliberately move our awareness from our head (the seat of our will and ego) to our spiritual heart with an intense feeling of devotion, we are actually kneeling before the presence of God within us. It is much more powerful and cleansing that the act of physical kneeling. It is also the best method to align your will with God’s Will. Bow your head toward your chest. Concentrate on your spiritual heart. Feel it. Breathe “through” it. During inhalation mentally say “Dear Lord”, and during exhalation, “Thank you”. Continue for several minutes. Then sit straight, with your spine as vertical as is comfortable to maintain without any tension. Continue your breathing prayer “Dear Lord, thank you” for another minute or so. Now you are ready for the relaxation phase of the exercise. previous chapter | next chapter |
